Cast Change

You’ve just been named the casting director of your favorite television show (or movie franchise). The catch: you must replace the entire cast — with your friends and family. Who gets which role?

I actually considered choosing Game of Thrones for this prompt… then I thought better of it. Basically I’d be killing all of my friends and family off, and the only thing better is to be eternally lost in some part of a forest or to be incestual twins. Or they can all be Hodor.

So I have several problems to overcome. Any TV show that I am currently in love with is most likely one made by Joss Whedon. I’m a bit obsessed. And the problem (or rather lack thereof) with Whedon’s shows are that his casting is superb. I could not imagine his characters being played by any other actors. His characters are also so specific and so unique, it’s hard to just pick out any person in my life and stick them with that specific role, because it’s not like they’re playing a high school jock or the badass mofo — they are Mal, Buffy, Angel, etc.

Without further ado, then, I will try my best to recast Firefly, because it really is my all-time favorite show. Here we go.

Mal would be played by my father. My dad’s the sort of guy who will be fairly laid back about things and will remain calm, but when it comes to the things that matter, you don’t want to get in his way. He’s a humble hard-worker, and a reluctant leader of sorts. Also, I have a feeling if he studied acting way back when, he could have really perfected that dead-pan humor that Nathan Fillion has.

Zoë would be played by my friend S (you guys don’t know these people so I’m just gonna use letters). They’re both incredibly loyal friends (though I think Zoë’s a bit too loyal to Mal at times), and they’re both badasses. If I were in an actual fight sometime in my life (I’m hoping that won’t happen), I know she’d have my back, and I know when I thank her she’d just shrug it off like it was no big deal. She’s rebellious like the rest of the crew is, and can keep a straight face through pretty much anything.

Wash would be played by my friend P. They’re both quick-thinking and a little bit awkward with the talking, but funny and smart all the same. Neither of them are really in on everything since they’re too busy using their brains and skills, but they can put their foot on the line when they know something is amiss.

Simon would be played by my friend S (whose name may or may not also be Simon… what a cool coincidence that would be). They’re both very outwardly loyal to friends and family, highly intelligent, and can really get fired up about something if you bring up the right topic. They’re not afraid to argue, even if it’s with someone with much more authority, and even if it gets them into a bit of a pickle.

Beyond that, I really can’t think of any other people. I’m somewhat glad I don’t know anyone like Jayne, can’t name anyone for Inara or Kaylee, and Book is just too damn mysterious. I almost wish there were more fan theories about Book’s character, but if they try with the info fans have now, things would get fairly confusing. I’ll stick with my belief that he’s a criminal turned preacher, because the theories that he’s in the Alliance ruins that character for me.

I’ll cast myself as River because I’m completely nuts for thinking I can continue this blog throughout the school year. I am not, however, a secret supergenius, or a telepath, or a dancer. If only.
